About Us
Welcome to our website! We are therapists, instructors and relationship partners. We love the work we are engaged in and appreciate how deeply this work aligns with our passion, which is helping people create positive change, increase their wellbeing, and live happy lives.
We all face times of difficulty and struggle in our lives, whether personal issues or problems in a relationship. At Metta Emergence Counselling we understand these problems and difficulties, and support our clients to uncover and understand their internal, and often unconscious, world and how it may be impacting their ability to participate in healthy relationships and in a happy life.
We use an integrative approach to counselling which draws on therapeutic modalities from various schools of therapy. Our framework is grounded in the Humanistic or Person-Centered perspective as well as Family Systems Theory, and is informed by Mindfulness/Buddhist Psychology, Neuroscience, Gestalt Therapy, Transpersonal Psychology, Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), and Hypnotherapy. This integrative approach seeks to improve the effectiveness of counselling as we believe that no single therapeutic philosophy can meet the needs of a world of diverse and unique individuals and the wide range of problems and life circumstances they face. Using this approach, we empower our clients to develop new ways of perceiving and being that transform their lives through expanded awareness, conscious choices, and loving relationships.
We practice according to the Ethical Code of Conduct and Standards of Practice of our association – Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT).

Maria Alexandre, BA, RTC, MTC, RCS
I have been in private practice for 15 years supporting individuals and couples to identify and release the blocks and obstacles that prevent them from living the life they want. My approach to therapy is integrative and my main focus is to support my clients to understand the challenges they face, move out of unhealthy patterns of thought and behaviour and move toward authentic self-expression and a greater capacity to create a deeply fulfilling life.
Mindfulness is foundational in my therapy. We cannot act beyond our level of consciousness, so once we are aware, then we can make different choices. Through mindfulness and self-inquiry, we begin to change our minds about the purpose of life’s transitions, challenges, and difficulties. Our struggles can become opportunities for insight, growth and transformation that allow us to change our painful stories.
The foundation of my counselling approach is person-centred, Transpersonal and based on Positive Psychology. I am passionate about helping people. The most important change that I have noticed in my counselling work is the shift that happens when people realize that they are worth loving. That who they are is good, worthy and enough. Supporting my clients to remove the blocks to self-love and self-compassion is my work and my passion.
For the last 16 years, I have also been an Instructor with Clearmind International Institute in their 3-year Counsellor Training Diploma Program where I teach in both in-person and online classes. I also provide professional supervision to counsellors and others working in the counselling field.
As a Counselling Therapist, I see individuals and couples in-person, or via Zoom and Skype.

I believe in the power of Positive Psychology – we all have the power to change our lives at any time, no matter our circumstances. This deep realization can bring empowerment and direction to our lives, where we may have once felt alone, neglected, or left behind.
I believe we all have the ability to expand ourselves beyond our limiting beliefs and thoughts. This ability is inherent in each of us and I welcome the opportunity to assist you in your personal evolution. We are all greater than the sum of our parts. I strive to bring understanding, clarity, compassion and enthusiasm to my work in supporting individuals and couples to create a life of authenticity and purpose. You CAN change your life, and I would be honoured to support your journey.
In the past I have spent time as Crisis Centre staff, providing crisis counselling to both walk-in and telephone clients, critical incident debriefing to other staff and volunteers, and was also responsible for the training of new crisis telephone volunteers. I have also supported adults with physical and mental disabilities in both home and work situations throughout the province of BC, and held positions with the agency responsible for providing assessment and feedback of similar facilities to the Ministry responsible for their oversight.
