Who are you? What is your story? How do you experience yourself and interpret the world you live in? The narrative that you tell yourself and others about who you are and the world you live in impacts your emotions, body, and spirit. As each day goes by, you are constantly creating your life and adding to the story of who you believe you are.
How does your story affect your life? How do your personal myths, or beliefs, empower you or imprison you? Personal myths are learned in early childhood and form in relation to whether you felt wanted or unwanted, important or unimportant, considered or neglected. Other aspects that impact what you believe about yourself might be your gender, your birth order, your sibling relationships, how your parents or caregivers modelled primary relationship, your early school experiences and even the stories that you were told about who you needed to be in the world. This internal world of meaning, beliefs, thoughts and feelings that are rehearsed constantly, consciously and unconsciously, becomes your reality. It also becomes the biggest influence on how you relate to yourself and others, in healthy or unhealthy ways, and the unhealthy, and often destructive, patterns of thought or behaviour that are the sources of personal struggle and pain.
By becoming aware of the origin of these myths, beliefs, and patterns, you are better able to understand how the past has shaped your present experiences, choices, and behaviours. What are the issues, struggles or difficulties, that hold you back or challenge you in your life? What is the story you tell about your life? What meaning do you give to the events that have shaped your life?
